AIRCOVER DOCUMENTATION GUIDE

AirCover without a receipt: can I still request reimbursement?

No longer have the receipt for the furniture or appliance damaged during a stay? Learn what other information can help document the item, its existence, its condition and its value in a reimbursement request through Airbnb.

Overview

I do not have the receipt for the item. Now what?

This comes up a lot.

A television bought a few years ago, an older sofa, a piece of furniture that was already part of the property, or an appliance whose paperwork is long gone.

When damage happens, the question follows: Without a receipt, can I still request reimbursement through AirCover?

The Host Damage Protection terms require legitimate, verifiable evidence of the loss and allow Airbnb to request different documents and information during the review.

A receipt or invoice can be important evidence, but it is not the only kind of record the terms mention.

What will be enough depends on the item, the damage and Airbnb's review.

What to submit if you do not have the receipt

If the original proof of purchase is not available, start by gathering everything you legitimately have about that item. That can include:

Earlier photos of the item Videos of the room Brand and model Approximate purchase date Condition before the damage An old manual or warranty A repair quote A replacement quote

Step 1

1. Identify exactly which item was damaged

Do not log only: "Broken TV — $600".

The more legitimate detail you have about the item, the better you can document it.

Item: LED television
Brand: The manufacturer
Model: The specific model or reference
Purchased: Approximate period of purchase
Prior condition: In good condition at the move-in inspection
Damage found: Cracked screen after checkout
Repair / replacement: Technical quote and market pricing

That detail makes it clear exactly which item the request refers to.

Step 2

2. Look for earlier photos of the item

If you do not have proof of purchase, check whether legitimate earlier records of that item at the property exist.

For example: listing photos, photos of the property, inventory records, earlier inspections, or videos and photographs taken during other stays.

Those records can help show the item was part of the property.

One caveat: an earlier photo can help document that the item existed and what condition it was in, but it does not necessarily prove what you paid for it. Different evidence serves different parts of a request.

Step 3

3. Check whether you have any other proof of purchase

Not finding the receipt does not necessarily mean no record of the purchase exists.

Look only for real documents you still have related to the item (bank statements, order confirmation emails, manuals or certificates).

If you find something, keep the original document and present the information as Airbnb requests it.

Do not alter dates, amounts or details to stand in for a receipt you no longer have.

Step 4

4. Get a repair quote

When the item can be repaired, a quote helps document the cost of the loss.

The document should make clear:

Which item will be repaired What the technical problem is What work will be done What the estimated cost is Who provided the quote
Step 5

5. If it cannot be repaired, document the item properly

When an item cannot be repaired, details about brand, model, age and condition become especially relevant.

The Host Damage Protection terms ask for information about the estimated cost of repair or replacement, along with documents supporting the amounts presented.

That does not mean you can look up the price of a similar new product and assume that is the reimbursement amount. The review follows the criteria and conditions Airbnb sets.

Frequently asked questions about reimbursement without a receipt

Does AirCover pay the price of a new item?
Not necessarily. The amount considered in a request can depend on depreciation and on the item's condition. Gather: age + condition + specifications + damage + repair cost.
How do I show the item was mine?
The current terms accept photographs, videos, documents, appraisals and earlier inventory records from the property.
Can an inventory help?
Yes. Instead of scrambling for old photos after the loss, you look up the inventory you already logged: Room → Item → Brand/Model → Photos.
Property inventory →
Do old photos work as proof?
Photos show the item existed at the property and what condition it was in, but they do not show what you originally paid. Different kinds of evidence complement each other.
What if the item is very old?

Gather what you actually know. Do not invent an exact purchase date if you do not have one. Record the approximate period and provide details about the item's condition before the stay.

A practical checklist

Earlier records
  • ☐ Listing / property photos
  • ☐ Logged inventory
  • ☐ Earlier inspections
  • ☐ Videos of the room

  • ☐ Date identified after checkout
About the value
  • ☐ A formal repair quote
  • ☐ A market replacement quote
  • ☐ Statement or email records, if any
A word of caution

Do not create a "receipt" to replace the one you lost

If you do not have the receipt, do not try to manufacture a document to fill the gap.

Airbnb's current terms require that documents and information submitted be legitimate and verifiable.

Do not create or alter invoices, receipts, proof of purchase, dates, amounts, photographs or item details.

Use only genuine records.

Ongoing prevention

The real fix is starting to document before the problem

You may not have receipts for every item already in the property. But you can start today building a better history for the stays ahead:

1
Log items
Record the furniture and appliances that matter.
2
Brand and model
Include detail that makes each item recognizable.
3
Photograph
Build current visual records.
4
Inspections
Check the items between check-ins and checkouts.
5
History
Keep the timeline documented.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about AirCover without a receipt

How to document belongings without proof of purchase.

Can you request reimbursement through AirCover without a receipt?

Airbnb's terms require legitimate, verifiable evidence, but they do not treat a receipt as the only accepted document. Earlier photos, videos, brand and model, technical repair quotes and proof of ownership can all help.

How do you prove ownership without a purchase receipt?

Airbnb mentions earlier photographs at the property, videos, repair receipts, manuals, appraisals and prior inventory records as common ways to demonstrate ownership.

Does Airbnb reimburse the price of a new item if mine was old?

Not necessarily. The amount considered may apply depreciation based on age, prior condition and the Host Damage Protection terms.

Can I create a backdated invoice or a generic receipt to submit?

No. The terms require genuine, verifiable documents. Submitting false invoices or altered receipts can lead to immediate denial of the request and penalties on your Airbnb account.
