AIRCOVER RECOVERY GUIDE

AirCover denied your reimbursement? See what to review and what to do

Was your Airbnb damage request refused or only partly approved? Understand what information to review, how to organize the evidence better, and what the next steps can be.

Overview

My AirCover request was denied. Now what?

A denial does not mean every request is refused for the same reason.

The outcome can relate to the circumstances of the damage, whether the case is eligible, the amount requested, the deadlines, or the information and evidence submitted.

So before anything else, the first step is understanding: Why was the request denied?

From there you can assess what has already been submitted and whether other relevant records of what happened exist.

Step 1

1. Read the reason Airbnb gave

Start with the message about the decision.

Do not simply resend every document without understanding the point being questioned.

Try to identify whether the decision relates to things like:

Responsibility for the damage Missing documentation The amount requested The item's earlier condition Whether the damage is eligible Submission deadlines

The reason for the decision should drive what you do next.

Step 2

2. Check whether you can ask for another review

Airbnb states that certain Host Damage Protection requests may be reviewed automatically.

If you disagree with the outcome of an automated review, there may be an option to request a human review and provide additional evidence or context.

Check the options presented specifically in your case and follow the instructions Airbnb gives.

Step 3

3. Review the evidence you submitted

Now go back to the documentation you filed. Ask yourself:

  • ? Do the photos clearly show the damage?
  • ? Is there any record of how the item looked before?
  • ? Can I identify which item was damaged?
  • ? Did I explain when the problem was found?
  • ? Do I have documents that support the amount requested?
  • ? Is the information tied to the right stay?

The goal is not simply adding more files. It is making the context of what happened clearer and more verifiable.

Step 4

4. Can you show how the item looked before?

This can be one of the hardest things to reconstruct after a problem happens.

Say you submitted a photo of a damaged TV.

The photo documents the current state.

But a question can remain: How did that TV look before that guest arrived?

If you have earlier records, look for:

BEFORE
Item logged in the inventory/inspection ✓
STAY
Guest in residence
AFTER
Change identified
ISSUE
Damage documented with photos and history

A sequence over time can provide far more context than a single photo.

Step 5

5. Check whether the amount requested is documented

Another key point is being able to justify the value of the loss.

Depending on the case, check whether you have:

A repair quote
When the item can technically be fixed.
Proof of purchase
When it is available in your records.
Item details
Brand, model, condition and approximate purchase date.
Replacement documentation
Current market pricing to replace the item.

The amount requested is not necessarily the item's original purchase price. The assessment can take the applicable rules and the item's characteristics into account.

Step 6

6. Organize the timeline of the damage

Instead of presenting disconnected information, try laying out what happened in order.

1
Before the stay
How was the property or item recorded?
2
During the stay
Messages in the platform chat.
3
After checkout
When was the problem found?
4
After identifying it
When was it photographed and reported?
5
The request
Which documents were attached?
Step 7

7. Check your Airbnb conversations

Messages exchanged inside the platform can also be relevant.

The guest may have mentioned that something broke, asked about an item, acknowledged an incident, sent photos or commented on a situation related to the damage.

Do not alter or try to reconstruct conversations. Organize only the genuine records that actually exist.

The Host Damage Protection terms allow Airbnb to review communications between the host, the guest and the platform itself while assessing a request.

Step 8

8. Submit additional information when that option is available

If your case allows another review or additional information, focus on the reason for the denial.

For example:

"The item's earlier condition could not be determined."
→ Look for genuine earlier records of the property from before check-in.
"The amount is not sufficiently documented."
→ Organize formal repair quotes, receipts or replacement pricing.
"There is not enough information about what happened."
→ Lay out the timeline with dated photos and move-in and move-out records.

Do not create documents, dates, receipts or evidence that did not exist. What you submit must be legitimate and verifiable.

Common scenarios

Understanding specific denial scenarios

AirCover denied for lack of evidence
Resending the same photo does not close the gap. Understand the difference between proving damage exists and showing when it was identified and which item was affected.
No purchase receipt
Not having the receipt can make it harder, but check what other documents on value, brand, model and quotes you can submit.
Guide: without a receipt →
Partial approval of the amount
Host Damage Protection applies rules for calculating losses and depreciation. The final amount may not match what you originally paid.
Appeals and disputes

Can I still dispute a decision?

That depends on the outcome given and the options made available for your request.

Airbnb states that some requests may first receive an automated review, and that the host can request a human review and provide additional evidence or context if they do not accept the outcome.

Follow the options and deadlines presented specifically in your case.

Do not delay reviewing the decision if Airbnb gives you a window to respond or provide information.

A word of caution

What not to do after a denial

A denial is frustrating, but try not to turn the documentation into an attempt to assemble proof after the fact.

Avoid:

  • altering dates on photos or documents;
  • creating false or inconsistent receipts;
  • editing images to change the apparent extent of the damage;
  • inventing information about the item's earlier condition;
  • attributing to the guest something you cannot support;
  • submitting documents that are not authentic.

Beyond not clarifying what happened, false information can compromise the request. Work only with genuine, verifiable records.

Ongoing prevention

How to avoid the same problem in the next stays

If Airbnb asks how a given piece of furniture looked before the stay and you never recorded it, you cannot go back in time and create that record.

That is why the best preparation starts before the next guest:

1. Build an inventory
Log which furniture, appliances and items are part of the property.
Inventory →
2. Photograph items
Keep organized visual records.
Photo inventory →
3. Move-in inspection
Record how the property is being handed over.
Move-in inspection →
4. Move-out inspection
Check and record changes before the next stay.

Build a history between stays with Listio

Listio does not affect Airbnb's decision and does not guarantee that a request will be approved. Listio's role happens mainly before you need to file a request.

With it, hosts and property managers can organize inventories, run inspections, record photos and keep a history of their properties between stays. So when damage turns up, you have earlier records to consult instead of hunting for evidence only after the problem.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about a denied AirCover request

What to do after a request is refused.

What do you do if AirCover denies your damage reimbursement?

Start by understanding the reason Airbnb gave. If the refusal came from an initial automated review, check whether you can request a human review and provide additional context or evidence (earlier photos, receipts or quotes).

Can you request a human review of a denied AirCover request?

Yes. Airbnb states that requests assessed by automated review may offer the option of a human review if the host disagrees with the initial decision.

Why does Airbnb approve only part of the amount requested?

The amount considered can be reduced by depreciation from use, by limits in the Host Damage Protection terms, or by costs that were not properly supported with valid receipts or quotes.

Can Listio reverse an Airbnb reimbursement denial?

No. Listio is independent software for running inspections and tracking property inventory. It has no integration with, and no influence over, Airbnb's reimbursement decisions.
